How CWS Products Fail - and How We Fix Them

• Roller wear on the 8600 and 9700 series sliders. CWS built a lot of Vero Beach homes with these extruded aluminum sliders, and the nylon roller wheels were never meant to carry a heavy door panel in salt air for twenty years. When they flatten, the door drops and drags on the track. We replace the rollers with stainless steel carrier assemblies, not the original nylon, because we’ve seen too many OEM rollers fail again within three years. The fix is straightforward, but the door has to come out of the frame to do it right.
• Track corrosion and pitting near the drainage weep holes. Coastal air has a way of finding aluminum. On CWS doors installed before 2010, we regularly see the bottom track pitting where water sits at the weep holes, especially on homes east of US-1 in the Central Beach and Riomar areas. We clean the track, address the corrosion with a corrosion inhibitor, and replace the track cap when needed. The aluminum frame expands in the heat, and a door that slid fine in February starts to bind at the lock side by August. It’s almost never the frame. It’s the strike plate shifted out of adjustment, compounded by debris you can’t see in the bottom track. We realign the strike, adjust the roller height, and the door slides like it used to. If it doesn’t, we keep working until it does.
• Failed locking mechanisms on older French-style patio doors. CWS used a lever-mortise lock on their hinged patio doors, and about fifteen years in, the internal spring loses tension. The lever still moves, but the deadbolt doesn’t fully throw. That’s a door that locks often enough to convince someone it’s fine, until it isn’t. We replace the lock body with a modern multi-point assembly where the door prep allows it, and we adjust the strike so the new lock seats clean on the first try.
• Roller adjustment screws stripped from years of seasonal adjustments. This one is self-inflicted but common: someone kept cranking the height adjustment screw every time the door dragged, and eventually the adjuster slot rounds out. On CWS sliders, the adjuster lives inside the bottom rail at the stile, and if it’s stripped, the only real fix is a new roller housing. We drill out the old housing cleanly, replace it, and set the height once. Then we hand you a note with the measurement, because a properly set door should not need adjusting every season.
