The quickest way to match the part is the etched glass code or the serial sticker on the hinge edge of the door panel. That code tells us whether you have a 1998 Frenchwood gliding door or a 2015 A-Series hinged patio door, and those are not the same animal.

For Andersen specifically, we recommend OEM parts for anything that carries the door’s weight: hinges, hinge plates, and astragals. Aftermarket equivalents from companies like Truth Hardware or Prime-Line work fine for handles and latch sets, and they can save you a third of the price. Signs Your Andersen Door Installation Is Failing

• The door drags or scrapes on the threshold. This usually means the hinge plates have worn or the door panel has settled. The fix is re-shimming the plate or replacing a worn hinge, not planing the bottom of the door, which is what we’ve seen done on homes along the Miracle Mile corridor and it never lasts.
• The handle turns but the latch doesn’t move. Andersen’s internal latch mechanism uses a small rectangular drive bar that strips over time. The spring-loaded detent wears flat, usually after 12 to 15 years of daily use, and the handle just spins. The replacement is a whole latch set, not a quick fix you can patch.
• You can see daylight around the astragal on a French door. The astragal, the vertical piece where the two panels meet, has a foam seal that breaks down fast in Florida’s salt air. Once the seal is flat, you’re paying to cool a room that won’t stay closed. The astragal itself often needs replacing, not just the foam.
• The door won’t stay latched in wind. A worn strike plate or a misaligned latch catch means the door pops open on pressure. Homes east of US-1 deal with this more often because of the storm gusts off the Atlantic. Sometimes the fix is a adjusted strike, sometimes the entire latch needs to be replaced.
• The rollers on a gliding door grind or stick. Andersen gliding patio doors ride on adjustable steel wheels with ball bearings. Salt air pits the bearings, and the wheel flattens over time. You’ll hear it before you see it. Replacement rollers are cheap; ignoring them means the track gets scored, and now you’re paying for a track replacement too.

What we’d rather you not do is remove an Andersen hinged door panel to replace a hinge without a second person and a door jack. A Frenchwood panel can weigh 80 to 110 pounds, and if it drops, it takes the jamb, the trim, or your foot with it. Same goes for the tensioned astragal on a French door; there are screws under the cap that hold a rod in compression, and releasing it wrong sends parts into the room.
