CWS Window Installation: The Vero Beach Owner’s Guide

Which CWS Models This Applies To

CWS produced several aluminum window lines for the Florida market, and the part that fits one series will not necessarily fit another. Most CWS windows we encounter in Vero Beach fall into one of three groups: the single-hung and horizontal slider lines, the casement and awning lines, and the fixed picture window line with removeable glazing beads.

The fastest way to identify what you have is to open the sash and look for a white or silver manufacturer sticker on the frame or the top edge of the sash. The sticker will show a series number and often the date of manufacture. If the sticker has peeled off or faded, which is common in the salt air near the Indian River Lagoon, we match the part by measuring the sash profile, the balance shoe or hinge geometry, and the glass thickness. That’s where the experience matters. A CWS balance spring from a single-hung built in 1998 is not the same length or tension as one from 2006.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question: for CWS hardware like tilt latches, balance shoes, and crank operators, quality aftermarket equivalents often outlast the original and cost 20 to 30 percent less. But for glass packages and frame components, we recommend staying with OEM or an exact-spec match. The frame extrusions on CWS windows were proprietary, and a part that is close enough rarely is.

Signs Your CWS Window Installation Is Failing

• The sash won’t stay up or won’t close flush. On single-hung and slider units, this typically means the balance spring or shoe has worn out. On casements, it’s the crank operator or hinge. Either way, forcing the window closed just damages the frame track.
• Condensation or fog appears between the glass panes. That means the insulating glass unit has lost its seal. It will not fix itself, and in Vero Beach’s humidity the fogging typically gets worse year over year.
• The window locks but still rattles or leaks air. This usually comes from worn weatherstripping or a sash that has settled out of square. We see it most often on the west side of homes, where the afternoon sun heats the aluminum frame unevenly.
• The crank turns but the sash moves only partway, or grinds. The gear teeth in CWS casement operators strip over time, especially on windows that get daily use. Lubricating a stripped operator buys nothing.
• Water stains appear on the interior sill or wall below the window. On older CWS installations, failed glazing tape or a deteriorated sill dam lets wind-driven rain in. The window may look fine from inside the house. The problem is behind the frame flange.

There are two things a homeowner can safely inspect on a CWS window: the visible weatherstripping around the sash, and whether debris has built up in the bottom track of a slider. Clear the track, check the seals, and see if the window behaves. That’s the extent of what we recommend attempting.

CWS window sash removal, balance spring replacement, and crank operator swaps all involve parts under spring tension or precise alignment work. The balance springs on single-hungs store enough energy to do real damage to a hand or an eye if they let go during removal.
