The common thread is an aluminum rail profile, either 2-1/4-inch or 2-1/2-inch face height, with tempered glass panels that measure either 1/4-inch or 3/8-inch thick depending on whether the railing is a guardrail application (over 30 inches of drop) or a simple deck divider.

The compatibility gotcha most owners miss: Pella glass railing panels cannot be interchanged with the Pella screen-rail or picket-rail components, even though the post caps look nearly identical. The glass channel is cut differently, and the standoff spacing is not the same. If you give us the model number stamped on the underside of the bottom rail, or a photo of the post cap, we can tell you within a minute whether we have the part on the truck or need to order it. For OEM components, Pella still supplies most of the current-line pieces, but lead times run three to four weeks from the factory. • White chalky residue on the rail or standoffs. Aluminum oxidation is normal in coastal air, but when a milky, powdery crust forms and flakes, the anodized or powder-coated finish has been compromised. It’s not structural by itself, but underneath that crust is often where the pitting starts on the metal.
• Cracked or chipped glass edge. A small chip at the glass corner, often hidden inside the channel, can grow into a full crack because the glass is under constant edge pressure from the expanding frame in heat. Tempered glass edges are unforgiving. A cracked panel should be replaced before the deck’s next heavy use. • Rust streaks running down the post from the cap. The pressed-in post caps are the cheapest part of the system, and they’re often the first to go. Once they rust through, water gets inside the post and sits there. That’s when the corrosion accelerates from the inside, where you can’t see it.
